Bringing nearly 200 visual effects shots to life over a three-month timeline was no small feat. A talented team of artists across our Toronto and Vancouver offices collaborated under the leadership of VFX Supervisor Brannek Gaudet and VFX Supervisor Michael Cliett, working closely with Production VFX Supervisors Kevin Blank and Mike Brazelton. Their work spanned everything from 2D and 3D environments to set extensions, digital doubles, and FX snow simulations, utilizing industry-standard tools like Nuke, Houdini, and Maya.

Recreating the exterior of Grand Central Station at night was one of the project’s most ambitious undertakings. Guided by storyboards and camera direction from Director Ben Richardson, the team built the scene entirely in CG––animating vehicles, digital crowds, and integrating matte paintings with 2D atmospheric effects like smoke and lighting to enhance realism.

Inside Grand Central, a blue-screen set was transformed into a bustling 1920s train station. The team extended key architectural elements––including the ticket booth, entrance, and staircases––using geo builds and matte paintings, then layered in digital doubles, atmospheric haze, and period storefronts to complete the immersive environment.

Blending historical elements seamlessly into the footage required a careful balance. Ensuring digital doubles moved naturally within Grand Central Station involved refining walk, stair, and idle cycles. Asset reuse played a major role in optimizing production, with CG characters being repurposed across multiple shots and adjusted to fit varying camera angles.

Beyond Grand Central, the visual effects team worked to de-modernize New York City, replacing contemporary elements with historically accurate signage and building facades. Environmental enhancements like era-appropriate lighting and textures helped to ensure the city truly reflected 1923.

Bringing the harsh Montana winter to life was another crucial task. Paradise Valley’s snow-covered landscapes were digitally enhanced with realistic layering and tree movement simulations. Snow accumulation on pine trees needed careful attention to maintain the natural look, while additional details like subtle breath work, snow glints, and interactive lighting added to the realism.

Through a combination of cutting-edge technology, expert artistry, and meticulous attention to historical accuracy, the team helped elevate 1923 Season 2’s visual storytelling. By blending VFX with practical elements, they transported audiences back to the early 20th century while maintaining cinematic excellence. The result is a visually stunning portrayal of history that enhances the show’s compelling narrative.
